Little Weighton -Yorkshire Country Women's Association

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association there is a special display of flowers around the village. The Theme is blue and white and they will be seen at the side of the 4 access roads into the Village, outside the Village Hall and in the hanging baskets.

We are also arranging flowers in Rowley Church at the beginning of June when we are holding a Thanksgiving Service followed by a finger buffet and a Celebration Cake. We are also participating in celebration dinners with our East Riding members in Hull and full County membership in York. We owe grateful thanks to Steve Howarth for doing the planting and donating extra plants; and also the Gardening Club for arranging the hanging baskets.

We came into being in 1983 following many years of struggle with the National Executive of the Women’s Institute. We were a part of the W.I. for many years but problems arose when the county boundaries were changed in 1974.

Since the 9th century when the three ridings were created by the Danes, administration had been set up accordingly. In 1974 these councils were abolished and replaced by five -Cleveland, Humberside, North Yorkshire, South Yorkshire and West Yorkshire. The new names were only for Government administration; and for every other reason, as quoted by the then Secretary of State for the Environment, “Yorkshire is still Yorkshire” The National Federation of the W.I decided to adopt a policy of realignment with the new boundaries and in spite of several years of dialogue they were still intent on dividing the existing Yorkshire Federation into five regions.

In 1983 small branches were closing and the Yorkshire Federation was wound up. The many branches who felt strongly eventually banded together and so the Yorkshire Countrywomen’s Association was born. We now have 125 branches throughout the East, West and North Ridings, with approximately 4500 members; with a Central Office in York and three Area Committees.

We meet monthly with interesting speakers, organise fund raising activities aimed at charities close to our own hearts and donations to promote “Village Life”. We are a friendly group and would welcome new members “with open arms”. If you are interested in joining please contact Audrey Ringrose 848989
