Little
Weighton - Yorkshire Country Women's Association
Annual
Report - June 2007
May 2006 saw the beginning
of the 24th year of the YCA in Little Weighton, and as
usual was the start of a full round of activities. We
chose a warm summer evening in June to walk around Pearson
Park and the Avenues district, guided by Mr Schofield
who pointed out many interesting houses and features including
the homes of Philip Larkin, Ian Carmichael and Dorothy
Sayers and the famous tree sculptures.
July was not such a good choice
of weather so we had to use imagination as the Garden
Party was held in the Village Hall. Mrs Whipp visited
in September dressed as Lord Nelson and spoke about the
Jubilee Trust which enables disabled and disadvantaged
youngsters to go to sea for a few days.
October was spent walking the Coast
to Coast with the aid of slides and amusing commentary
from Mr Key. Mrs Bilham followed with humorous accounts
of holiday mishaps, and December of course is party time.
Excellent food, good entertainment from the Hessle Playgoers
and the traditional mince pie and coffee finale. Members
and guests from Fellowship and Skidby YCA all pronounced
a very enjoyable evening.
January brought forth the Beetle
Cards and June Cocksworths “Feel Bags”, which always cause
much puzzling. Pam Kingswood showed her talents by explaining
with the aid of “these I prepared earlier” how to make
bags using squares of Japanese patchwork. A very informative
talk with slides was given by Miss Pat Deans on The Crown
Jewels and the year ended with the Annual Dinner at Rowley
Manor. Margaret Foster is once again to be congratulated
on providing such a varied monthly programme.
At the Area Competition, Little
Weighton ended with 21 awards and Liz Foster won a cup
for most points in the “Make It” section and at Yorkshire
level Little Weighton produced 15 entries and Gwyn Nicholson
gained an award for a Bird Table.
Invitations from Skidby have resulted
in several happy joint events including a visit to
Shugborough House, a weekend at the Christmas Extravaganza
at Thursford, Carols at York Minster and the Annual Quiz
Evening.
Village activities have been hosting
the MacMillan Coffee Morning, Bingo at The Black Horse,
helping at the Village Hall centenary celebrations, supporting
the Playing Fields family day and the Pond Lights switch
on. With other efforts we have been able to make generous
donations to MacMillan Cancer, Yorkshire Cancer, R.N.L.I
and Rowley Church. Members have also supported Y.C.A outings,
holidays, lunches, county meetings, helped at Driffield
Show and other events.
It is thanks to a lot of hard work
from committee, and excellent support from members that
Little Weighton remains an active and happy branch looking
forward to the next busy year.
